| Allergies
are among the country's most common, yet often overlooked disease.
There are no cures
for allergies, however; allergies can be managed with proper prevention
and treatment.
- An
estimated 50 million Americans suffer from all types of allergies
(1 in 5 Americans)
- Allergies are the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages, and the 3rd most common chronic disease among children under 18 years old
- The
most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are: tree,
grass and weed pollen; mold spores; dust mite and cockroach
allergen; and, cat, dog and rodent
- Approximately
10 million people are allergic to cat dander, which is the most
common pet allergy
- Persons exposed to high spore levels of molds can become sensitized and develop allergies to specific mold types
- According to the Allergy
and Asthma Foundation of America; there are only a few dozen molds
that cause allergic reactions. the most prevalent are:
- Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium,
Helmin thosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Mucor, Rhizopus and Aureobasidium
- Many of these same molds are prevalent in water damaged buildings
- Current research suggests that the role for freestanding indoor air cleaners is limited. Elimination of the source of the allergen is the most effective way to reduce symptoms
- Air conditioning with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter works better than electrostatic air-cleaning devices and much better than freestanding air cleaners
- Air cleaners will not help if there is excess moisture in the indoor environment. When indoor humidity is above 65 percent, risks of fungal growth increases. Ideally keep humidity around 45 percent
- Allergic
asthma is the most common form of asthma, affecting over 50% of
the 20 million asthma sufferers
- Allergic asthma
is triggered by inhaled allergens resulting in asthma symptoms
